The effect of herpes zoster vaccination on the occurrence of deaths due to dementia in England and Wales
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that HZ vaccination improved cognitive function at a fairly advanced stage of the dementia disease process because most individuals whose underlying cause of death was dementia during our nine-year follow-up period were likely already living with dementia at the start of the HZ vaccination program. By using a different population, type of data, and outcome than our prior study in Welsh electronic health record data, this analysis adds to the evidence base that HZ vaccination slows, or potentially even prevents, the natural history of dementia.PMID:37732219 | PMC:PMC10508823 | DOI:10.1101/2023.09.08.23295225

Use of adrenaline to manage suspected anaphylaxis following COVID-19 vaccination: An Australian retrospective cohort study
CONCLUSION: Less than one in five individuals who received adrenaline met Level 1 BCCD criteria for anaphylaxis. Many reactions that were treated with adrenaline had little to no diagnostic certainty of anaphylaxis and in such cases repeat vaccination had a high likelihood of being tolerated. Increased awareness and education on objective signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis is required to ensure appropriate use of adrenaline.PMID:37633752 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.08.024

The potential cost-effectiveness of next generation influenza vaccines in England and Wales: A modelling analysis
Vaccine. 2023 Aug 24:S0264-410X(23)00963-5. doi: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.08.031. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNext generation influenza vaccines are in development and have the potential for widespread health and economic benefits. Determining the potential health and economic impact for these vaccines is needed to drive investment in bringing these vaccines to the market, and to inform which groups public health policies on influenza vaccination should target. We used a mathematical modelling approach to estimate the epidemiological impact and cost-effectiveness of next generation influenza vaccines in England and Wales. ...

Regional and neighbourhood-based variation in three types of vaccine attitude in Britain
This study investigates the geographic patterning of attitudes towards vaccination in Britain (England, Wales, and Scotland). Using survey data from the 2018 Wellcome Monitor linked to lower super output areas and NUTS2 regions, this study provides evidence that negative attitudes regarding the risk of side-effects from vaccination and regarding the efficacy of vaccination are correlated with higher levels of local deprivation. While previous research has highlighted associations between vaccine uptake and deprivation for a variety of reasons, this study specifically contends that particular individualised types of caution...

Systematic review of rotavirus vaccination cost-effectiveness in high income settings utilising dynamic transmission modelling techniques
CONCLUSIONS: Rotavirus vaccination was found to be cost-effective in all identified studies that used dynamic transmission models in high-income settings where child mortality rates due to rotavirus gastroenteritis are close to zero. Previous systematic reviews of economic evaluations considered mostly static models and had less conclusive findings than the current study. This review suggests that modelling choices influence cost-effectiveness results for rotavirus vaccination. Specifically, the review suggests that dynamic transmission models are more likely to account for the full impact of rotavirus vaccination than sta...

Trends in SARS-CoV-2 infection and vaccination in school staff, students and their household members from 2020 to 2022 in Wales, UK: an electronic cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: Public health bodies should be informed of the protection COVID-19 vaccines afford, with more research being required for younger populations. Furthermore, schools require additional support in managing new, highly transmissible variants. Further research should examine the mechanisms between child deprivation and SARS-CoV-2 infection.PMID:37347268 | DOI:10.1177/01410768231181268

Current resources about COVID-19
(Last updated 19th June 2023)IntroductionDuring lockdown I maintained a set of blogposts linking to resources about COVID.   I have not updated those for some time, and have now decided that they are no longer needed.  I have added the word " Archived " to the start of each page title, and tried to make it clear that they are no longer updated.  Of course, COVID-19 has not gone away, and has become one of the infectious diseases that is with us always.  So, I think although those older posts are no longer useful, a current list of resources might be.   So, here is a shorter...

Causal evidence that herpes zoster vaccination prevents a proportion of dementia cases
medRxiv. 2023 May 25:2023.05.23.23290253. doi: 10.1101/2023.05.23.23290253. Preprint.ABSTRACTThe root causes of dementia are still largely unclear, and the medical community lacks highly effective preventive and therapeutic pharmaceutical agents for dementia despite large investments into their development. There is growing interest in the question if infectious agents play a role in the development of dementia, with herpesviruses attracting particular attention. To provide causal as opposed to merely correlational evidence on this question, we take advantage of the fact that in Wales eligibility for the herpes zoster vacc...

A qualitative study on COVID-19 pandemic impacts on parental attitudes and intentions for routine adolescent vaccinations: The role of trust
CONCLUSIONS: For some parents, experiences of poor system readiness and growing distrust towards health and vaccination systems strengthened their pre-existing vaccine hesitancy. We offer recommendations on how trust in the health system and immunisation can be optimised post-pandemic to increase uptake of routine vaccines. These include improving access to vaccination services and clear, timely information about vaccines; supporting immunisation providers in their immunisation consultations; working alongside communities, and building capacity of vaccine champions.PMID:37246066 | PMC:PMC10201314 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.05.037
